Sorry I'm writing a little later today! I was waiting until I got my travel plans to email. A few quick items:
-I'll be sending some stuff home this week
-I love the Ecco's!!!!!
I need more of that good contact solution. I have about a third of a bottle left.
-Thanks for the box I got today! Could you send a laminated copy of Jeffrey R. Holland's talk Safety for the Soul?
-I wrote a letter for you today answering a ton of questions and I'm sending it tomorrow
-Can you please get Coleman Scholz's address at BYU?
I was shocked to hear about the Earthquake! Wow! And to think a hurricane is coming is even crazier! Could this be a sign of the wickedness of Washington D.C.??!! Joke lang. Anyways it's been a good week! It's really starting to wind down. Next week will not be a normal week. We got to host new missionaries this week which was a ton of fun. We also get to do it again next week. The first missionary I got to host was Elder Jeremiah Burr who was on my hall at BYU! It was so much fun to see him. I was really impressed with the parents of the missionaries I hosted, especially the mothers. With the exception of one mother who ran through all the MTC volunteers, sprinting to her son who had supposedly forgotten his immunization records, they were very good! It was cool to see these families sending off their sons and daughters with a smile on their face. What a hard thing it is! In the Book of Mormon, Laman and Lemuel complain about what a "hard thing" their father had commanded them to do, by leaving behind all they had. I love Nephi's response that Lehi had not commanded it, but rather God. I know that all missionaries are not only called by a Prophet, but also by the Lord himself.
We've had some interesting conversations in my district about families. There have been a lot of instances back at home. One missionary's father cut one of his fingers off with a saw, another's cousin was pouring gas into a lawnmower and something caught fire and burned his face, another missionary's family car broke down and they had to take all the money out of his savings to pay for the repair. Also, Elder Tamale's father is in the hospital, and is not doing well. I think there are quite a few Elders wondering, "What's going on?" A mission is a constant trial of your faith, truly a refiners fire. I believe we get the most out of our trials when we are at the edge of our limits. I know that true blessings come from serving a mission. I've already felt them, and I know that they will continue to come. I can still hear Elder Holland saying, "Everything good that has happened to me I owe to my mission!"
Real quick, my travel plans. I leave SLC at 8:15 PM on September 5th and fly to LAX landing at 9:22 PM. I fly from LAX at 1:55 AM to Taipe, Taiwan arriving there at 6:10 AM on September 7th. I leave Taiwan at 9:30 AM and land in Manila at 11:40 AM. That'll be such a long trip! I'm so excited though. As lame as this sounds, I can't wiat to get in a car and just be on 1-15!! Who would have ever guessed. Elder Tenny is on my flight to LA and then he goes to Hong Kong, and is scheduled to land in Manila 25 minutes before me.
Last Sunday I was asked to speak in Sacrament meeting. I spoke in Tagalog! Pretty awesome! I may have sounded kind of stiff, but it was good. I spoke about Repentance. All three missionary talks were in Tagalog, the first time since I've been here. There was a new district that had come in and their eyes were pretty big! Our Branch President got up and said, "New Elders and Sisters, 6weeks ago these Elders were sitting where you are, not knowing any Tagalog. And know look at them...Wala! Everyone just busted up laughing because our Branch President didn't know that "wala" means nothing or without in Tagalog!
I know this Church is true. I know that Jesus Christ himself guides and directs this work. I am so grateful for the opportunity I have to be apart of it. Think about the grand plan, and tell me, how is this message not applicable and important to literally everyone on this Earth? I have the opportunity to help bring others to Christ and by so doing help them enjoy the Gospel and the same blessings I've enjoyed. Never shy away from sharing the Gospel. The stakes are too high and too important for each individual soul to do so. I love you so much! Thanks for all your love and support!!!
Love,
Elder Yost

That was really fast!
Dear Mom and Dad,
Another week down! That was really fast! I get my travel plans next Thursday, August 25th. Next week is my last full week of classes and then I'm gone! Time is so weird here because the days can seem like forever but before you know it's P-Day once again. I'm trying to think about the past week and it's all kinda blurring together.
Few notes: My shoes came and fit great, but Elder Tamale's shirts are too big. He's kind of picky about his shirts so I'm not sure what to do... With my scripture, you can just use verse Alma 26:12. Thanks so much for the package!!! What a treat! Sounds like everything is good back home! Congrats mom on the WW! I'm so proud of you, keep up the great work! Dad you've become quite the popular person since I left! Who knows you may become Charles Krauthammer's Wally Pipp if you know what I mean.
It hasn't been the easiest week though. We haven't been able to teach our Progressing Investigator as much as we would have liked because our teachers been gone and the schedule's been a little crazy. It's by far the best practice we get, in terms of teaching and it's frustrating not being able to do it as much because I think it's is way way way more beneficial than some other activities we do here.
We met with our teacher to talk about our progressing investigator. It's tough because we haven't taught him in over a week. We got to ask him some questions as if he was the investigator and we were shocked by what we heard. We thought he had a testimony of the Book of Mormon but he wasn't anywhere NEAR where we thought he was. I'm so frustrated because I'm trying my hardest and trying to teach as well as I can. I know I'm not a great teacher but I am trying my best. I have found that as a companionship we need to teach with unity in order to have that power and authority, it is something we work on every day.
On Thursday night we watch a video of talk that Elder Holland gave at the MTC about 10 years ago called The Miracle of a Mission. It's legendary around here. I love Elder Holland so much, but I have never seen him more animated ever. He talks about his mission, and how it meant so much to him. He said, "My mission means everything to me. Everything. Every blessing I have received since is because of my mission." About halfway through the talk he stops, and just stands there. Then he says, "There is someone here tonight that is thinking about going home. Don't you ever go home. It will ruin your life." Wow! Strong, strong words. You can really feel how important serving a mission is to him. The part that really struck me was when he started talking about the Savior. Elder Holland said, "Salvation is not a cheap experience." It certainly wasn't for the Savior, and it won't be for us. This is why missionary work is so tough. The Salvation of a soul is not an easy experience, and was never meant to be easy. He said "We will never be able to feel even a fraction of what the Savior felt in the Garden and on Calvary. However, sometimes we need to venture near the Garden, near Calvary, and feel some of that pain." Missionary Work is tough. I knew that coming in, but didn't quite know the extent. The Savior knew when he rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday that in the next week, he would bear the heaviest and must painful burden ever known to man. Yet, he pressed with conviction and determination. He was here to fulfill his Father's will, not his own. So in the greatest exhibition of love and charity, he bore all, for us, for you and me.
I want so much to be like Christ. I will never be able to remotely comprehend the pains he bore, but I can commit myself to help others come unto him and use his atoning sacrifice, in order to bring about the salvation of a soul. Even if that means venturing in the general direction of the Garden and Calvary, the joy that comes with this work and this Gospel far outweigh that trials, discouragement, and tough times. I know my Savior lives. He loves us, and has restored his Gospel to the Earth today. All we need to do is come unto him, feel the prints in his hands, side, and feet. If we follow the path he has laid before us, we will find the true happiness and joy that comes with keeping the commandments, and one day returning to our father in heaven. I love love you so so so much!!! Stay true to the faith.

Looking Inward
Another week down! They're really starting to fly by! Just a few notes:
The picture you sent looks good for my missionary plaque, and the scripture I would like to use is Alma 26:11-12
11 But Ammon said unto him: I do not boast in my own strength, nor in my own wisdom; but behold, my joy is full, yea, my heart is brim with joy, and I will rejoice in my God.
12 Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever.
It's been an interesting week. Elder Tenny was made zone leader! He'll be awesome! And then my District Leader was made the other Zone Leader with Elder Tenny. I've been praying for strength. Just this week in general I was struggling with some things. I was so excited to go to the Temple today, and was really looking forward to the feeling of peace and love that I get in the Temple. One really tough thing about the mission field is you don't have a phone to just call home and say, "I've got this problem...what should I do?" The medium we do have to communicate with our father is not as simple as picking up a phone and dialing a number. We need to have the spirit to be able to put that call through and be able to hear clearly from the other end. Many a time this is easier said than done because often when we really need that communication, it's because there's a bad connection solely coming from our end. It's up to us to do the things that we need to do to fix it!
Every week I've started having a PPI(Personal Priesthood Interview) of sorts with the Savior in the Temple. It's so good for me because I'm able to track how I'm doing, and how I need to improve. It's amazing to me that during his earthly ministry how the Savior was able to correct with firmness, yet show so much love. There's a scripture in D&C 121:43 that says something about when you correct someone then show an increase in love afterwards. So I was sitting there and asking, what do I need to do? I'm stubborn by nature, and am usually pretty opinionated. I wonder if I am coming off too hard to others? I've made a commitment to not talk about politics and I've done a pretty good job of that. There was a time this week when another Elder and I had a disagreement. I was pretty firm with this Elder, and didn't say anything mean, but probably could have been kinder about the way I did it. I'm thinking about this experience and as I sat there in the Temple, I felt like the Savior was directly teaching me what I needed to do. As I sat there I thought, the Savior was crucified for the sins of the world. He was killed by the very people he had blessed for thousands of years, providing them with prophets, manna, miracles, and countless other things. He was spit upon, tortured and killed in the most humiliating and painful way the world knew. His apostles, special witnesses of his divinity forsook him. And all the while, he shouldered the burden. He kept on putting one foot in front of the other. He suffered for the very sins of those crucifying him. Wow. He did all this with love in his heart, without malice. He did all this, and I'm complaining about my situation?
Elder David A. Bednar said "Knowing that through the Savior's Atonement, one is not only cleansed from sin, but one can receive strength to do very hard things." I love this so much. Jesus Christ did the hardest thing that has ever been done on the face of the Earth. He did so with no selfish motive, or reward for him. He gave all the glory to his Father. Every day it becomes more and more apparent to me how truly divine and perfect he was. I try to be like Him every day and in everything that I do, yet, I always fall short. However, each time, I climb a little higher. I'm so grateful for the Savior. In and only through him are we able to be saved through his Atonement.
Last Saturday night we had a workshop on the Atonement. We took real profiles of people who are not members, and tried to apply teaching them the Atonement. There is not a person on this planet that does not need Jesus Christ. Everyone from President Monson to the vilest of people needs the Savior. As a missionary and representative of Jesus Christ, I bear my witness that he lives and loves us all. Through his perfect and all encompassing sacrifices, we are able to be made clean and return to his presence. He has established his Church on the earth in our day and has restored his Priesthood authority to administer his church and the ordinances thereof. I leave my testimony with you, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
I love you so much!!!!!

Listening, Promptings, and Learning!
Can you believe that I've officially been here a month?? Crazy! Sometimes it feels like it's been forever, and yet the days go by so fast. Could you send me a hangar for my ties as well as another oxi clean gel stick, I'm not done with the first one but it gets a lot of use!!
Thanks so much for your letters! It's awesome to get a letter every single night! I've also gotten letters from non family this week which is awesome! It's been an awesome week. I've learned so much, and hopefully learned some Tagalog on the way. On Wednesday the whole curriculum for the MTC completely changed. Missionaries just coming out are more effected than we are, but there are a few changes. One of them being the Training Resource Center (TRC)is completely different. When Preach My Gospel was introduced around 2005ish, it was first introduced in the MTC, and the missionaries took it with them to the field. However, many missionaries in the field just kind of discounted it because a new missionary was trying to teach them how to become a missionary. So, having learned from that, the Church has introduced the 8 new fundamentals to missionary work. However, they've been teaching them in the field for about a year and a half now, so trainers and other older missionaries don't just throw them to the wayside. The Eight fundamentals are things like Receiving Revelation through the Book of Mormon, Revelation through Prayer, etc. In the TRC, instead of teaching the Preach My Gospel lesson, we now teach a regular member, playing themself, and try to teach them the fundamentals. We had an awesome experience yesterday...
We were supposed to teach 2-20 minute lessons on Receiving Revelation through the Book of Mormon. Our first lesson was with a college student named Katie. We've taught her every single week so we were comfortable teaching her. Yet another sister came in in the middle of the lesson and the interruption kinda threw us off our groove. We tried to share scriptures with them, I shared Mormon 8:24, but they accidentally went to Moroni 8:24 which talks about people being under condemnation of a broken law. Oops!!! We got a good laugh out of it.
Our second lesson was with a recently returned missionary named Rob. We got in the room, and I think we were a little rattled. He shared with us a scripture about miracles, and then things just took off. He told us how he had recently broken up with his girlfriend and how he was pretty down about it. I felt prompted to share Ether 12:6, on of my favorites, "And now, I, Moroni, would speak somewhat concerning these things; I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith." We talked about how we don't receive a witness until after the trial of our faith. Something good to remember all the time. The Lord gives us challenges and only afterward do we receive that confirmation. Think of the early saints. They witnessed angels, miracles, and even the appearance of Christ to a select few. Yet, it wasn't until AFTER that they received a witness. The Lord wants to see how "in" we are. Are we going to bail at the sign of trouble? Or are we going to stick it out, through thick and thin. Elder Tamale shared D and C 8:2 about the Holy Ghost. As I was scanning the page, I was drawn to verses 9 and 10. Verse 10 says, "Remember that without faith you can do nothing, therefore ask in faith." BINGO! I shared this and thought back to a talk by Elder Oaks about the Book of Mormon. He said that the purpose of the Book of Mormon is to proclaim the Jesus is the CHRIST. I turned to the opening page in the Book of Mormon and read it. At this point, I had no idea where I was going with this. I then said, "I'd like to share a scripture in Enos..." What? I didn't have a scripture in Enos to share! Yet, I was calm as I've ever been. I turned to Enos, having faith that the Lord would reveal to me what I needed to share. I turned to Enos, and my eyes drifted to verse 8 which reads, "And he said unto me:Because of thy faith in Christ, whom thou hast never before heard nor seen. And many years pass away before he shall manifest himself in the flesh; wherefore, go to, thy faith hath made thee whole." Wow. He looked at it, and I think he started to tear up.
As I wrote last week, if we're obedient, the Spirit will guide us. The Spirit literally whispered to me what I needed to share, and I acted. I'm so grateful for this experience. In the Joseph Smith movie, he says to Brigham Young, "The Lord takes raw materials, shapes them, and refines them." It's my prayer that we keep his commandments and live so we can become what he wants us to be. I Love you so much! I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
